INTRODUCING OUR TASTING ROOM STAFF
If you stop into the O&M Tasting Room in Langley, you're apt to run into one of Ott & Murphy's fabulous five.
Terry Hudkins, alias "the Captain," steers the course on Fridays, and often on Thursdays and Mondays--that is until winter, when the warmer waters of Mexico beckon him and he joins his first love--Mystique--his sailboat (not the wine) for relief from the winter blues.
You'll find Govinda Rosling gently shepharding customers who flock to the comfort of the Tasting Room on Wednesdays and weekends. Other days Govinda works monitoring the Pigeon Guilimots who nest on Whidbey Island. She's our resident wild-life expert--a gifted author and illustrator. Check out her latest publications when you visit us.
Sommer Albertsen directs our entertainment, and she stands out like a star herself as she sparkles behind the bar on Friday and Saturday evenings. Sommer is a gifted dance teacher, whose healing-dance training works its magic in Langley on days she's not dancing around the Tasting Room.
David Ott, winemaker, and general wizard, appears behind the bar on Saturdays, and sometimes on a Sunday or two. A founder of Swede Hill Cellars, and the Ott of Ott & Murphy Wines, David brings his zany and good natured humor to the world of wine. When he's honestly employed, he labors to organize low-income weatherization in Snohomish County.
Diane Kaufman, novice winemaker assistant, and design addict, can be found behind the bar on Mondays, Thursdays, and sometimes on a Sunday. Though Diane maintains that she retired a few years ago, she can't resist the lure of a design problem--and keeps the Tasting Room evolving toward some as-yet-unrealized vision.
Rene Flynn-Federspeil, resident artist--and window display director/designer is sometimes to be found, having climbed inside the display window, creating a scene--and also creating a unique show for those who stroll Langley's 1st Street casually.
WINE CLUB: There's No Place Like OM

LIFE IN THE NEW TASTING ROOM
July 7th 2011
Open for six glorious months now. The Gray Whales were the hot topic in March, April, and even May. We could see them from our view windows overlooking the Salish Sea and Saratoga Passage. Now we're in the "dog" days of summer and we have live music most Saturday evenings from 7 to 9 pm.
The Tasting Room itself, with live edge bars, intimate interior, fabulous views and outdoor seating has been a great hit in Langley. On weekends we are frequently standing room only. Our Langley neighbors, fellow businesses, and residents have made us feel very welcome, and we seem to have found the cooperative atmosphere we always hoped would thrive on Whidbey Island.
February 5th, 2011
The live edge maple bar top was installed today. We quietly open February 11th, just ahead of the launch of WIV's Red Wine & Chocolate back-to-back weekends with Langley Mystery Weekend!
Bottling: 19 April 2011
IN APRIL we completed the 1st bottling of 2011, with nearly 400 cases of 2010 Rose', 2010 Viognier, and 2009 Double Bluff Red. Thanks to the hard work from our dedicated crew of volunteers, all was completed in just under 9 hours. Way to go crew!
We will have another bottling in late Summer for our 2009 Grenache, 2009 Petit Sirah, 2010 L'Entente Blanc Marsanne, 2010 Viognier Elephant Mountain Vineyard, and the new red Bordeaux- 2008 Radieux.
2010 presented a unique vintage for Washington State. Early summer saw cool temperatures followed by some heat in the last half of summer. Harvest has been bringing the grape varietal's to us in a rush and all at once as the grapes reached critical balances. Some vineyards had difficulty ripening varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon. An early hard freeze in Washington State in late November affected many of the states best vineyards, and the 2011 vintage will show reduced crop levels as a result.
2010 wines will show the balance of a cooler vintage. The Summer started cool, and progressed with little in the way of extended heat spikes. Vineyards who reduced crop levels and managed vines well were rewarded with ripe and balanced fruit- the result of extended hang time. Flavors in these vineyards developed nicely, and to maturity, while retaining good acidity. The resulting wines are beautiful. Rich flavors and true varietal characters are intact, with good acidity and tannins. The most balanced vintage we have worked with at Ott & Murphy.
In 2010 we crushed 20 tons of these wine grapes:
Syrah- 3 clones Petit Sirah Grenache Viognier
Roussanne Marsanne Chardonnay Tempranillo
Cinsault Mourvedre Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Franc Malbec Petit Verdot Merlot
The 2010 Vintage In The Cellar: 23 Feb 2011
The 2010 whites are showing beautifully- all are completely dry, and aging Sur Lie on neutral French oak. Elegant and lithe with substantial layering of flavors, balanced alcohols, and splendid acidity. The 2010 reds are finishing ML and beginning to show their character. 2010 will be a very balanced vintage with lower alcohol, solid acidity and more restrained flavors. A complete opposite from the 2009 vintage. Standouts now (a little early to tell) seem to be the whites, Grenache, Cab Franc, and some of the Syrah based co-fermentation lots.
